Gi vs No-Gi for Beginners: The Easiest Way to Choose

If you’re new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, one of the first decisions you’ll face is whether to train in the Gi or No-Gi. While both styles teach the core principles of Jiu-Jitsu, they each offer a different experience, and choosing the right one can make your early training smoother and more enjoyable.

At Gracie Barra North Salt Lake, we help beginners explore both options in a safe, welcoming environment. Here’s a simple guide to help you decide where to start.

What’s the Difference Between Gi and No-Gi?

Gi Jiu-Jitsu involves wearing a traditional uniform, which includes a jacket, pants, and belt. The fabric allows you and your partner to grip the clothing to control, submit, or escape from positions.

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, on the other hand, is practiced in athletic wear, typically a rashguard and shorts. Since there are no collars or sleeves to grab, control is based more on underhooks, body positioning, and speed.

Which One Is Easier for Beginners?

It depends on your learning style. Many beginners find Gi Jiu-Jitsu easier to start with because the grips slow things down. You have more time to think, adjust, and learn technique. The pace is usually a bit more methodical.

No-Gi tends to move faster. Without grips to slow your opponent down, scrambles happen more often, and reactions need to be quicker. Some beginners enjoy this intensity, especially if they have a background in wrestling or other fast-paced sports.

“The best style is the one that keeps you coming back,” says Prof. Mark Fonte. “Some students fall in love with the tactical grip work of the Gi. Others prefer the athletic challenge of No-Gi. You can start with either, or try both.”

Technique vs Athleticism

Both Gi and No-Gi teach the same foundational Jiu-Jitsu concepts, but each style emphasizes them differently. In the Gi, timing, grip strategy, and patience are key. In No-Gi, you rely more on body awareness, movement, and conditioning.

Neither one is better than the other—it’s just a different path to the same goal.

What About Self-Defense?

Both styles of Jiu-Jitsu are excellent for self-defense. Gi training can simulate situations where someone is wearing a jacket or hoodie. No-Gi feels more like what you might encounter in regular clothes. At Gracie Barra, we incorporate self-defense principles into both styles, so you’re covered no matter what you choose.

Are There Differences in Rules and Competitions?

Yes. Gi competitions allow a wider range of grips and slower setups. No-Gi competitions tend to be faster-paced and often use different point systems. If you’re interested in competing, it’s helpful to try both and see which format you enjoy more.

But for beginners, there’s no pressure to compete. Your first goal should be building a foundation and enjoying the journey.

What Should I Wear?

For Gi classes, you’ll need a Jiu-Jitsu gi (uniform), which we provide for trial students. For No-Gi, wear a rashguard or tight-fitting athletic shirt and shorts without pockets or zippers. At Gracie Barra North Salt Lake, we have clean, comfortable gear available for all beginners.

Can I Train Both?

Absolutely, and many students do. Starting with one doesn’t lock you into that path forever. Once you feel comfortable, trying the other style will deepen your understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. Each one teaches you different details and helps round out your game.

“We encourage students to explore both styles over time,” says Prof. Fonte. “It makes you a more complete grappler and keeps training fun and fresh.”
