Professor Mark Fonte has had a lifetime of interest and periodic studies in various martial arts and in law enforcement. He began his formal Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in North San Diego County’s beach community of Encinitas, California in 2010 under the instruction of Master Nelson Monteiro and Professor Rafael Ramos. He has made many connections in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu communities including many now in the greater Salt Lake, Utah area.
Professor Mark has a genuine passion for instructing people of all ages, from young children to seniors, passing on his knowledge to those who can and want to benefit from it.
Prior to his move to Utah in 2024, Professor Mark retired from California law-enforcement, in December 2023. He spent the majority of his career serving many of the communities of San Diego County. However, before retiring as a Unit Supervisor for California State Parole, he was an active “Training Staff” member as a Lead Range Master/Firearms Instructor and a Defensive Tactics/Tactical Instructor, which also included instructing agents in the use of less lethal defensive weapon options such as Taser/CEW, Baton, and OC.
As a full-time resident and stakeholder in Woods Cross, Utah, Professor Mark founded Gracie Barra North Salt Lake. This is a means for him to continue to be of service to the public and now specifically North Salt Lake and the surrounding communities, to pass on his knowledge of self-defense through Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu “Jiu-Jitsu For Everyone” to those who want to learn it.

All of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors are certified through the Gracie Barra Instructor Certification Program (ICP), which ensures they have the highest level of knowledge, teaching skills, and leadership qualities.
To stay aligned with best practices, our instructors must renew their certification annually. This not only reflects their dedication but also ensures they are in tune with the teaching philosophies of Master Carlos Gracie Jr., incorporating the values that make Gracie Barra a leader in the sport.
Additionally, all instructors undergo thorough background checks to create a safe environment for students. We prioritize safety by providing CPR training for every instructor, equipping them with essential skills to respond in emergencies. This commitment to continuous improvement enables our instructors to effectively guide you on your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in Utah, ensuring a safe and inspiring training atmosphere for everyone.
